Vincent Flatts Final Drive
Armed-to-the-teeth with new and original music, Vincent Flatts Final Drive are going full bore into 2024. Nothing but full-on, southern-infused, good-time, country rock ‘n’ roll.
Now, if you don’t know the band yet, you’ll feel like you do once you see them live. Stephen “Bertie” Burton fronts the band, and his killer voice and come-one-come-all stage presence hits every last person right between the eyes. Come see for yourself. He’s the real deal.
Rev21 is a collective of improvising musicians from across London. Inspired by the 21st chapter of the biblical book of Revelation - all about the new creation - the music is infused with a message of hope. The band brings together an array of young jazz talent who can regularly be found performing on the London jazz scene. Sadie Roach sings and plays piano with soulful understanding well beyond her years. From tear-jerking performances of jazz ballads like ‘Here’s To Life’ by Shirley Horn, to gritty, upbeat blues and soul, her unique tone is reminiscent of the late Nancy Wilson, or Dinah Washington, who performed and recorded with Sadie’s grandmother’s first cousin, Brook Benton. Sadie’s sound has been honed over the years into what is now a unique, gritty soul/RnB sound, reviving and giving a fresh, modern take to the sounds of Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes and the sound that really defined the Black Power movement in the late 60s and early 70s. Grupo Bossa! is an exciting new jazz ensemble specialising in the subtle and emotive music that is bossa nova. Featuring the vocal talents of Portugal’s Carmelia Mar, backed by specially assembled trio’s including Porto’s own maestro of jazz, Fino Lopes (guitar/bass), Midlands-based World music percussionist, Lee Boyd Allatson (drums) and the Leicestershire jazz scene’s go-to pianist, Peter Houtman. Rollo Markee started singing and playing harmonica when he was a teenager, having been inspired by his mentor Julius Junior, a blues singer from Jackson, Mississippi. Years on, Rollo has developed a rich, passionate and authentic blues voice. His valve amplified harp playing is full of tone, style and energy. Rollo is joined by Lewis Fielding and Franca Shaw - The Rollo Markee Trio. With two UK Blues Awards finals places under his belt, Chris Corcoran is considered one of Britain’s finest blues guitarists. He is also one of the only fully instrumental British blues acts and the performances with his trio, which have been formed by several decades of experience in blues clubs in the UK, are both thrilling and fascinating. He has already appeared in several guitar magazines and regularly gives masterclasses. His last three albums Blues Guitar Grooves (2017), Coolerator (2020) and Inferno (2021) were all awarded ‘Best Instrumental Album’ by the influential US website Blues Junction Productions. Ryan Bachman's music can best be described as Nü Jazz, which takes elements of jazz, electronic, and hip-hop, and combines them in new and compelling ways. Ryan will be joined by an incredible cast of Northampton musicians to bring you high-energy jazz, blues, trip-hop, and more. Band Members: Pigfoot was formed by Loose Tubes trumpeter Chris Batchelor in order to focus on classic 1920’s New Orleans themes with an open and original improvised approach to the material. This resulted in the acclaimed 2014 CD ‘21st Century Acid Trad’ Specialising in “passing classic pop tunes through their multi-idiomatic mangle”. Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the Supremes, have all been reworked with a mixture of “delicate poignancy and bumpy street-band nonchalance”. Which artist they’ll turn their attention to next is anyone’s guess, but you can be assured that you’ll be treated to some familiar pop songs reimagined as melodic jazz refrains and uninhibited conversational improvisations. Pigfoot are four knowledgeable and very skilful contemporary jazz practitioners infectiously having a ball. As sought-after soloists with separate lives, they only rarely convene as Pigfoot. Therefore, their outing at The Garibaldi Live is an opportunity not to be missed. Grown in the swamps of the Midlands, this ragged troupe twang banjos, saw fiddles, and squeeze boxes belt out harmonies to keep the old tunes alive. The Mudlands String Band deal mostly in Bluegrass & Cajun. But don’t expect anything fancy; these guys might have read a song in a dusty book, or learnt it from an old friend, or just heard it in a movie. And in true folk tradition, they’ll pass it on, mangled over the centuries, but with the spirit intact. They make a good racket for sure, so be prepared for a rowdy affair, with plenty of good time raillery and joviality. You might even feel inclined to do a spot of dancing. Gary Willcox is a drummer /bandleader. His Drummer/Composer Project focuses on the music composition of jazz drummers, provide audiences with a glimpse into the contribution that drummers have made to jazz music across the decades, not only as instrumentalists, but across a broader musical spectrum as composers. The music covers BeBop, Modal, ECM , 90’s NuBop, and includes tunes by Elvin Jones , Kenny Clarke, Paul Motian, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Stewart & others. Despite the wide variety of music in the set, this band creates a unified sound which brings continuity to the project. The musicians are given space to interpret the music in their own way, rather than being a showcase of styles or a recreation of the past. This reflects the flexibility of the music and the musicians that wrote it. Guitarist John Wheatcroft seamlessly integrates the sound and approach of modern jazz with the timeless Franco-American swing of the legendary Django Reinhardt, producing a sound that is both rooted in the traditions of the genre and vital, forward thinking and is highly original. John will be joined by Pat Davey on drums and the Mark Rose on double bass, performing a mix of original compositions and compelling arrangements with improvisation and group interplay to the fore. This promises to be an event not to be missed. The Blue Hawks will be playing an instrumental jazz set at 3pm, followed by two set of blues and rock'n'roll with Eddie Mac on vocals & harmonica. Eddie Max - vocals, harmonica Dan Plews and Guy Fletcher are two musicians who have played with many of the biggest names in British folk, and having played together since 1994, their communication is intuitive and spontaneous, resulting in a vibe that is immediate and contagious. Dan Plews has performed with musicians such as Jon Boden, Saul Rose, Eliza Carthy and Ian Giles. Gary has been at the heart of British folk rock for many years, including Little Johnny England, Albion Band and TRADarr. Earl Okin is a performer and entertainer, a jazz singer and instrumentalist, a songwriter, a satirist, a philosopher, a political commentator, a comedian, a raconteur and a quipster. He has given concerts around the world in theatres, clubs and festivals, and regularly performs at London’s premier Jazz Club, Ronnie Scott’s. Over his career, he has worked alongside such legends as Adelaide Hall, Benny Carter, Stephane Grappelli, Barney Kessel and Dame Cleo Laine among others. Dirty Deeds UK are a Bon Scott-era high voltage rock'n'roll female fronted AC/DC tribute band, Lost Latinos are a musical troupe specialising in feel-good Latin music, presenting a funky mix of Salsa, Latin-jazz, Brazilian tunes and grooves, and featuring the very talented Gary Wood (Trumpet), Julian Hunt (Keyboards), Rebecca Percival (Congas & percussion), Bryan Paul (bass), and Paul Whistler (drums). Ushering in a vibe of hot summer sunshine on a rather cold and dank February afternoon, be sure to wear your brightest multi-coloured shirt/top or dress, and bring your dancing shoes. The Frankensteinian is a regular feature of The Garibaldi Live’s matinee music programme. Featuring some of the best jazz and blues musicians from around and about the shire (and beyond), the Frankensteinian Monster Mashup is an assemblage of individual talent, hand picked and fused into a convocation of euphonious wizardry by the The Garibaldi Live's very own Dr Frankenstein, Andy Shaw. The result can only described as a musical performance of monstrous proportions. The line-up: Steve O'Gorman (sax), Gary Wood (trumpet), Ryan McAffrey (keyboards), Tom Purr (bass), Alan Savage (drums) The highly acclaimed Liverpool-based jazz guitarist John Wheatcroft is renowned for his inspired transcriptions of Django Reinhardt‘s extensive back catalogue from the Hot Club de France period. But Wheatcroft has another side to his playing; that of an essentially contemporary player, with an overriding musical reference to the jazz fusion movement of recent decades. Wheatcroft is aided and abetted by his close friend and regular sideman, the award-winning saxophonist, clarinetist, educator and composer Alan Barnes, with the rest of The afternoon is guaranteed to pack a powerful punch, musically speaking, The Garibaldi Live welcomes back the highly acclaimed Liverpool-based gypsy jazz guitarist John Wheatcroft, John will be joined on stage by the equally exceptional sax and clarinet player Alan Barnes. Both players are phenomenal at their craft, overflowing with inventive ideas and, equally important, the gift of communicating with an audience. Armed with formidable musicianship, mellifluous tonality, and insightful compositional perceptiveness, you can expect the crème de la crème of jazz manouche miscellany from the extensive back catalogue of the Hot Club de France legend Django Reinhardt.
